Short Saturday: Concise Copy (Rock On)

A while back my friend Jay Thatcher (@MagneticVerb), who is a graphic designer with his own marketing firm, was asked to make a one-minute presentation at the DISH Student Design Conference hosted by AIGA Nashville. The theme that year was “How the #@&! did you get that job?”

This is that presentation.

I think it’s brilliant. It uses words, music, and visuals; it has a strong narrative that leads the viewer forward to the denouement (and answers the question); and every second of this short presentation counts.

As a copywriter myself, I appreciate that. Effective writing is a distillation process, whether it’s marketing copy or storytelling. As an editor, I tell authors all the time to make every word count (usually when I am suggesting they cut something). Jay is a great writer. (Also smart and funny.)

Check it out.

For me the question is rarely, “What should I say?” but “What should I leave out?” Thanks for the link.

What is that old writing adage? Write what you want to write—then cut half. :)
